TEMPTRESS
FILES FOR
GUINNESS
RECORD
What do
Michael Jackson,
The Rolling Stones,
U2,
and Temptress have in common?
They've all played in front of millions, but Temptress has claimed the
record for the Largest Live Performance by a
Rock Band. Temptress, of course, subjected people to
our show.
Back then, the
act was billed as "The
World's Only All-Male Girl Band," Temptress has filed with the Guinness
Book of World Records for the title.
Initially, they wrote back saying that "free" concerts didn't
count, that's til we reminded them that the Garth Brooks show was free
too....they wanted to give him the record. Since when is he a fucking rock
act????
The record was obtained in New York City on October 31, 1997, Halloween
with appearances and performances throughout the day and night. The
Temptress float was featured on all the major network television news
stations and 6 and 11...

We even met up with two men that are often
asked questions, Dan Rather (What's the Frequency, Kenneth?) and Tom Jones
(What's New, Pussycat?) News crews were jumping up on the float, cameras
were every where.
Having performed in fishnets and lingerie in front of
The Today Show taping in Rockefeller
Center... Matt and Katie were kind of shocked when they saw the mayhem on
the plaza...
Then onto ABC Capital
Cities, for the The
Regis and Kathie Lee Show,
They had a costume contest outside and a big crowd, the camera men
loved the performance, so did the enthusiastic crowd. Michael
Gelman hated us (fucking homophobe) and wouldn't put us on. To piss him
off we turned up way past 11, you can hear us in the background
penetrating their "soundproof" set. Regis made comments about it
throughout the whole show.
In front of a large crowd waiting to get in
the
Jacob Javits Center........they had some kind of techie convention there,
people were screaming, we don't know if they loved it or were horrified...
Then
back up the west side to Columbus Circle, 57th Street from 8th to
5th Avenue, We did that and again turned up to 11, just so all the major
record labels could hear us from their lofty offices..
While on 57th,we stopped by The Howard Stern
Show, they also had a huge crowd along
with an on going freak show. Here's were our generator crapped out, so we
plugged into a Citibank ATM outlet (thanks Citicorp)..

This is were we thought our day would end
when we heard the sirens coming down 57th. The siren were the escort for
the President of China (the country)... the guy with the big square
glasses. The whole motorcade stops in front of the Temptress float and the
Stern crowd.
Every person in the vans gets out with a
camera and starts
taking pictures. We notice the President reaching into his pocket to get
his camera and hand it to one of the security guards in the front. The
guard gets out, emptying the camera on Temptress wearing a latex French
Maid's outfit. I guess there's photo's in Tienneman Square, Bejing of
Temptress with a caption "See what happens when you are a
capitalist???"... God bless America...
Then we moved onto Radio City
Music
Hall trying to figure out if the Rockettes
or if Temptress had nicer legs and better moves.
Cast your vote now!!! Since we would never be invited to play Carnegie
Hall, we figured let's storm the place, who else can claim playing Radio
City and Carnegie Hall the same day?
While
we were in the neighborhood, Temptress ran on-stage at the Fashion
Cafe during a fashion show, they were appalled!!!! I guess they don't
like the trashy-flashy look..
We figured we could start a massive traffic
jam in Times Square and get the record for that too (an arrest record). We
played a short set of about 6 songs in the middle of the square. the
Temptress float then we moved onto the front of Virgin Megastore,
the store manager there was very cool, encouraged the crowd, even asked us
inside to play. We had our wireless rigs so why not? We even ran into a
strip joint in Times Square and Temptress jumped up on the stage with one
of the dancers (we missed the photo opp).

From Times Square we moved onto Madison Square Garden,
and Penn Plaza there was quite a large crowd in front, we think they were
waiting for Knicks tickets. A CNN camera caught us there and the reporter
asked Temptress, "What's your goal in doing this today?"
Temptress replied with "We're trying to been seen by more people
today than will see the Stones their entire tour."
Temptress
ends up finishing with the day's journey at the Greenwich Village
Parade . New York City Police estimate
that the days' parade attendance was 2.1 to 2.3 million people, with Temptress
being the sole live performance of the day.
The Village Halloween Parade is such a huge
event, it was like performing in a stadium every city block. The
weather (it was almost 80 degrees that night) and the date (Halloween was
on a Friday) made for such a huge record breaking turnout. With all locations combined
Temptress performed a fixed set over 35 times, spanning 13 hours and 27
minutes (starting at 9:07AM and ending at 10:34 PM).
The days total attendance
has been estimated to be between 2.4 and 2.6 million people. The record
was previously held by Michael Jackson performing in Malaysia with an
estimated audience of 780,000 people. Each
year we try to break our own record on Halloween, we have fallen short
since then. For Halloween 2000 we are breaking out all the stops, after
all its the 25th anniversary of the Rocky
Horror Picture Show.
We are currently seeking a mass of Transylvanians to join us a we do the
Time Warp up Sixth Avenue. We make sure we'll stop by the Waverly Theatre
for a little.....participation. The are already building the float,
gathering volunteers and sponsors, let's break the record again, and
again, and again...
